POST 4 - Lloica or Loyka in Mapudungun.
There is a legend that
is heard in the south, like the singing of the Loica. That tells that a man
perched under a tree to rest, thirsty for so much walking. Upon awakening half
asleep, he heard several loicas flit, in his hunter's instinct, without
thinking he pulled out his shotgun and shot them. When he did it quickly, he
loaded the gun badly and it exploded in his eye. Agonizing the man in screams
he asked for help.
The Loica surprised
and with sorrow of seeing the agonized man flew to him chest and cleaned his
wound with a mint leaf, then she flew to a nearby river and drop by drop she
cleaned his wound. When she did it, her chest dyed of the red of his blood. And
when the man regained consciousness he asked for forgiveness.
I think this legend
speaks of kindliness and empathy, like how a bird that was despite being
threatened by a hunter, seeing him agonized she wanted to help him, and heal
him.
There is also talk of human aggression for no reason, kill for killing.
My mom told to me when
I was a little child, and it always stay in my memory. It seems to be a Mapuche
leyend.
